NIKE
REEBOK
ADIDAS
Marshall McLuhan states that in the media, "medium is more important than the message"
He says,
'what' we say is not as important as 'how' we deliver it.
the medium has the power to change the way we live and experience the world.
this is one theory about the media i greatly agree with and support. i can show you many videos or flashy pictures to support or express my point but i'm gonna use 3 vey simple pictures instead...
these 3 pictures that i have used are of 3 sports brands: nike, reebok, adidas (in this order)
just by the example of these 3 pictures, anyone who looks at them i feel will find reebok most appealing to buy although all 3 are very well known brands!
what do think about these pictures? and the theory?

  1. "Medium is more important than the message" -- I very much agree to this statement. A message doesn't have to be forcefully conveyed. A medium and how you convey the message is the most important for the message to get thru.

Look at this 2 sentences :

"Eat !! Eat !! Eat !! The Food on the table is getting cold."

"If you dont want to eat the food, i guess i will just donate to the birds, dont grumble on no food later"

How a message is presented here is enuf to show that in which manner(the medium) the person has spoken to convey the message.

Having the right medium and tone of voice for surely convey your message.

As for above, all are sports brands, but each sports brands has its unique-ness on their product in which they convey it thru this pictures.

I am a lover of abstract and its meaning.. for me if and advertisement is shown with abstract meaning.. thats what i would call a good advert :)

  2. being an art student i definitely believe a medium talks more then words.
through these various mediums the idea and message is brought about and though these mediums (images) the message of the work is embedded in our minds. it easier to remember the advertisement of a brand then the logos and tag lines of a advertisement.

  4. i think that this pictures really appeals to me.!like it is better that how it is delivered more than what is delivered.cause most people today would not really look so deep into the advert and all .they would see what catches their eyes.

the theory has its pro and cons.well attractiveness do play a great part, however, some people would definitely prefer what is delivered.like for instance, they would want to know how reliable the product is more than how attractive it is.

good post and good pictures to support your stand on the theory!

  5. I completely agree with the message "medium is more important than message" as the advertisements are suppose to attract a potential consumer's attention. The message is important but potential consumers do not pay much attention to it. Unless it is a advertisement which is benefitting the society the message is considered.

Although the theory does have some doubters, some people will differ by saying that message is more important. The message is only important to those who are thrifty or like to do research before buying.

I still stand by the theory as i think it is plausible.

  6. yeah i agree that if just by the photos, i would surely buy reebok shoes. Clear and appeals to the targeted audience. Don;t quite understand what message is the picture of addidas trying to potray. So, I think that media can be very ambiguous or clear. It depends on how the producer manipulate the media. So in the end, it all goes down to the user!

  7. MEDIA AND PRESENTATION ARE VERY IMP.ESPESSIALLY TODAY AS THE REACH OF THE MEDIA IS HUGE DUE TO THE JUMP IN TECHNOLOGY.AS FOR THE ABOVE PICTURES THE REEBOK PICTURES CATCHES YOU IMMEDIATELY AS IT CONVEYS SPRITE AND SPEED SHOWN BY THE CAR AND WHAT THE SHOE STANDS FOR.I FIND THE NIKE ADD IN BAD TASTE.I THINK MEDIA AND PRESENTATION IN ADDS IS VERY POWERFULL TODAY AND SHOULD BE USED WITH RESPECT AND UNDERSTANDING.

  8. hi pooja...!!!

communication is such an amazing thing...what is life really without it.. u can do it right or you can do it wrong...but whatever u do..it has such an impact on minds young and old.
whats most imp though is the impression you make on the younger minds coz they still have a long way to go and many many choices to make.
how you present a package is so important..
and media is such a large industry.
each n everything we do , see , buy , eat , hear is all related to communication.
it is really important that there is effective and responsible communication .

  9. hi pooja, this is imran...ur dad's architect in pune. ur logic is very true and here are some points to reinforce ur comments. the cycle of vision continues in the field of media Moreover, we entitle this cycle of vision as “VISUAL COMMUNICATION". Before we are four years old, most of us have learned The Alphabet Song. Sung to the same tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, it is unlike any other song because no pictures come to mind when singing it. With Twinkle, we can look up in the night’s sky and imagine a little star out of the billions shining just for us. However, a song about the letters in the alphabet does not carry any visual equivalents. We soon match up, however, concrete nouns with images for each letter in the song. Children’s books help to solve the mystery, “A is for apple….B for ball……” Each letter of the alphabet becomes a picture that corresponds with a complex set of direct and mediated images. We no longer have to think of an actual red, juicy apple or a round colorful ball. We can simply see the letter “ A” and know that it stands for that fruit. Before children learn to read and write, they do not know the difference between a line drawing and letter. When an adult writes an ‘A’, it is simply another drawing. Soon we learn that combinations of these letter-pictures mean things that are more complicated. When the drawings ‘A-P-P-L-E’ are combined, they form another picture which we learn stands for the name of the fruit. Now the letter-pictures become word-pictures that can spark other images in our minds of the thing they stand for. Man is bound by certain values, hopes, images and visions that media express through epigraphs. Early on however, we are taught to make distinctions between words and pictures. We are taught that pictures play a separate and subservient role to the words. pictures/media is a definite source to visually communicate the interface’s ability to extend human emotions, in particular the aspect of humour, peace (of mind) and joy

  10. i think that words are as impotant as the media used. a visually appealing ad may not be as effective if the words do not ring an alarm... the image will register in the customer's mind if the words have created an impact.

  11. I feel that what pooja said is actually true. Sometimes it is the medium and not the message that will make an impact on the consumers. It doesn't have to be flashy advertisements on the tv but simple but impactful pictures placed at the more eye-catching locations that will do the job. As the image will be caught and held there in the consumers' minds.

  12. Hey Pooja,

Back with a super post again as usual..
Well I think both has an equal impact on an advert. Without words, there is no meaning, without the pictures/media the words may not have an impact/ will not convey the message to the public.

How convincing each pictures look is not the main thing, i personally think all 3 of them have their own messages, but wordings do play an important part.

How much impact it gives on the public that matters most, to some extent the graphics do play am important part, but it must be convincing enough to the public to undertsand it, althought without wordings, but if it does not convey the message then it is of no use..

So i personally feel, both message and media graphics play an important role..both has its own pros n cons..

  13. hi pooh,

I totally agree that medium is of more importance as compared to the message. By just looking at the pictures you posted, I am already able to tell what the advertisement is about-sport shoes.

    A Tick for Nike
    3 Stripes for Adidas
    Reebok sign for Reebok

All I have to do is to look out for these signs because these are "signatures" or branding of the shoe and I will know that their respective companies have come up with new designs of sport shoes. With this, I will go check out these new arrivals and maybe buy a pair or two if I like them

  14. i dunno about me buying the reeboks actually, the one i found most appealing was the adidas one, just because of the creativity used... i thought though the reebok one was one that was cool and would appeal to people because it was shown as a car...
but though i found the adidas one most appealing, this too justifies the theory of "medium is more important than the message"... just by the way an object is shown is probably more important than the actual product...

  15. yes the medium is more important than the message.its the medium which will first attract someone and than only the message can be delivered
